Don Churchill

Coach Don Churchill, age 89, peacefully entered into Heaven on Saturday, January 16, 2016. He was born on Friday, June 18,1926, to the late Edward and Iva Churchill in Glendale, California. The family moved to San Diego where he graduated from San Diego High School and received All-City honors while winning the League Championship in basketball. Immediately after graduation, he enlisted in the Navy to serve his country during World War II.Don Churchill's Pictur

After being honorably discharged, he continued his studies at the University of Redlands where he played basketball and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. In 1953, he began his basketball coaching career where he led the University of Redlands freshman team to a championship. His first assignment in the field of education was teaching history at Coachella Valley High School where upon he was also voted Riverside County League Coach of the Year.

Moving to Stockton in 1956, Don became a member of the inaugural staff at Marshall Jr. High as head of the PE department. At Marshall, he continued coaching where he led the basketball program to six championships with two undefeated seasons. While there, he met and fell in love with Alberta whom he later married in 1962. During this time, he earned a Master’s Degree at the University of the Pacific.

In 1969, he transferred to Franklin High School where he taught PE and continued coaching. His 1975 sophomore team won the Stagg Tournament and finished the season with an SJAA League Championship. He completed his 31 year coaching career in 1984 with Franklin’s Varsity basketball team. Ultimately, he became the chair of the PE department, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1989.

Don was preceded in death by his siblings Allen Churchill and Elaine Paden. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alberta Fedler Churchill, daughter Terilynn, and son Kenneth Scott (Nicole), all of Stockton. Surviving grandchildren are Logan Cade, Kevon Scott, Tristyn Noelle, and Monique Nicole.

The family would like to express its appreciation to Quail Lakes Baptist Church (his church home for over 30 years), the Hampton Windsor Care facility for their many months of compassionate care, and Hospice of San Joaquin for making his last days peaceful.

William Woodrow Wilson

William “Bill” “ Woody” Woodrow Wilson, aged 80, passed away on January 15, 2016 at his home in Stockton , California after a battle with cancer. He is survived FB_IMG_1453054233609by wife Debbie, his children Susan, Douglas, Gregory, SkyDawn daughter in law Karla son in law Gilbert, Grandchildren Megan, Michael, Tanner, Benjamin, Lily his Great Granddaughter Lily, Godson Connor, his siblings Barbara, Beatrice, and Edmund. He is predeceased by brothers Robert, Clarence, and Jackie Ray.He found the many visits by family and friends in recent days a great comfort. Born in Dexter, New Mexico to William and Mattie Wilson on February 10, 1935.  The family moved to California while Woody was young and he grew up in Woodlake, California. Following graduation from Woodlake High School he joined the Army and rose to the rank of Sergeant  in the 82nd Airborne Division. Returning to California after his military service he married his first wife Florence and and rose to the rank of Sergeant with the Department of Corrections.  Later he began a distinguished career with the California Highway Patrol. While at the CHP he earned a Bachelor degree from California State University, Chico. He rose to the rank of Sergeant before his retirement in 1983 from the Stockton CHP office.  Following retirement from the CHP Woody could often be found enjoying the activity at various auction yards in the Stockton area.

SERVICES

Memorial services will be held a 1pm on Tuesday January 19th at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church 4910 Claremont Ave. Stockton, CA 95607.A celebration of life will follow in the fellowship hall.

Woody requested no flowers at his service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Woody’s name to the CAHP Widows and Orphans’ Fund www.thecahp.org.

Satoru Tamura

Satoru (Sugar) Tamura 1923-2016

Satoru (Sugar) Tamura passed away on January 14, 2016. Sugar was born in Lodi on September 24, 1923, to Rinkichi and Kiyo Tamura, and resided in Lodi until he and his family were interned at Rowher, Arkansas in 1942. While interned in Rowher, Arkansas, he was drafted to serve in the Army during World War II. By the time he reached Germany, the war ended. He left Rowher in April of 1943, and farmed in Colorado for a short time. He eventually returned to Lodi to resume his passion for farming with his parents and brothers, Shigeo and John. In 1950, he married Ethel Tsutsumi, and they enjoyed 61 wonderful years of marriage.

In 1984, his nephew, Joey, returned back to Lodi to join the Tamura farming operation; and Joey soon became Sugar's right arm and "Best Friend." Up until the day of his passing, Sugar sincerely looked forward to visiting Joey every morning to discuss what was taking place on the farm each day.

Sugar was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel; brothers, Shiego and John; and sister, Mary Matsuoka. He is survived by his two daughter, Libby (Kent) Iwamura, and Linda (Alan) Nakashima; grandchildren, Kendra (Mike) Gee; Lindsay (Brandon) Souza; Keenan (Stephanie) Iwamura; and Lauren Nakashima; and great grandchildren, Kaleb and Kelsie Gee; and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends meant the world to Sugar; and he especially enjoyed and appreciated everyone's visits over the past few years after Ethel's passing.

Sugar was known to all as a kind, caring, and compassionate man; and he will be greatly missed.

A private memorial service will be held at the Lodi Buddhist Church.

James H. Jackson

James H. “Jim” Jackson03/22/1924 – 01/11/2016 of Lodi

James H. (Jim) Jackson passed away on January 11, 2016 at Arbor Nursing Center. He was born in Los Angeles and raised there as well as in Needles, California.Jackson He enlisted in the United States Air Force in early 1942. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Operations and was honorably discharged in early 1946. He spent several years as an employee with Standard Oil Company of California. He attended and graduated from the California Highway Patrol Academy in 1953. He served in Kern, San Joaquin and Sacramento counties until his retirement due to job incurred injuries in 1973. Jim then worked for Wells Fargo Bank as a Collections Supervisor until his second retirement in 1983. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling, especially along the California and Oregon coasts. He also enjoyed the Great Mojave Desert. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Ruth E. Jackson, his twin daughters, Judith (Burt) Shook and Janis (Scotty) Reiswig, his step children, Richard (Donna) Webb, Catherine Domingo, Cynthia (Mike) Yount, and Michael Webb. He will also be missed by his 3 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, 6 step grandchildren, 5 step great great grandchildren, and 3 step great great grandchildren. Jim loved telling stories and making people laugh. He especially liked to talk about his experiences with the Highway Patrol. He wanted everyone to know that he wore out 4 ½ Harley Davidsons at 50,000 miles apiece. He was a great husband and a wonderful father to his children and his step children. We will miss him very much.

Larry Russell Napier

Larry Russell Napier7/21/1937 – 1/7/2016 Of Laclede, Idaho

Larry Russell Napier, 78, passed away peacefully in the presence of loved ones on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at his home in Laclede, Idaho. Larry was born on July 21, 1937 in St. Clair, Missouri to Russell and Linnie Napier. He worked for over 30 years as a supervisor for Certified Western Grocers in Stockton, CA before retiring in 2005. Larry marred Sandra Castagna on March 9, 1995 in Lake Tahoe, NV. They resided in Lodi, CA before making their final home in Laclede. Larry made close special friends as a member of the Laclede Community Church. He also enjoyed his morning meetings with the ROMEO’s (Retired Old Men Eating Out). Larry was very social, enjoyed people, woodworking, and traveling. Larry is survived by his wife Sandra McGrath-Napier of Laclede; four sisters, Peggy, Dorothy, Rita, and Pat; three daughters, Sheryl (Dave) Miller of Galt, CA, Shelly (Bobby) McGrath-Pimentel of Manteca, CA, and Deidra (Greg) Carpenter of Clements, CA; Larry was blessed with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren who will miss him deeply. He is also survived by his dog, “Jackson” and cat “Bandit” He was preceded in death by his parents and three additional sisters. Funeral services will be held at Evergreen Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park, Hwy 99 and Harney Lane in Lodi, California. Jackie Burch

Jackie “Jack” Burch05/20/1927 – 01/07/2016 of Idaho

Jack Burch made the transition from this life into heaven on January 7, 2016 at the Veteran’s home in Boise, Idaho at the age of 88. He was born on May 20, 1927 in Hillsboro, Texas. He married the love of his life Donna Tillery in 1950. BurchHe moved his family from Texas to Stockton in 1956 where he lived until 1982. He then moved to Modesto until 2010 and then to Boise, Idaho until the time of his death. Jack retired from Lawrence Livermore Laboratories. He was a World War II veteran and served two tours in the United States Navy. He was an avid weight lifter and weight trained many young boys down through the years. He boxed in the Navy and the Golden Gloves. He loved camping and horseback riding. He is preceded in death by his mother Eula Mae Burch, father John Burch, wife of 55 years Donna Burch, and two sisters Ruth Gordon and Etta Monk. He is survived by sisters Ruby Steele and Delores Whittington and brother Michael Burch of Texas, sons Jackie Dean (Vicki) of Texas, Steven Burch (Hennie) of Oakdale, David Burch (Marla) of Kuna, Idaho, and daughters Patti Solano (Joe) of Newman and Nancy Sudduth (Darrel) of Oakdale. His grandchildren are Dennis Mercer, Shelby Volonte, Jackie Wayne Burch, Michael Burch, Jeffrey Burch, Taylor Burch, Connor Burch, Hannah Burch, Sara Burch, and Abby Burch. He also has 13 great grandchildren.

Graveside inurnment will be held at Cherokee Memorial Park, Hwy 99 and Harney Lane in Lodi, Ca on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 1:00.

Shirley Ann Feikert Miller

Shirley Ann Feikert MillerMillerobit4/17/1924 – 1/2/2016

Dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Shirley Ann Feikert Miller, died peacefully in Lodi on January 2, 2016 .  She was born in Reno, Nevada on April 17, 1924, to Erma and Clyde Vernon and was adopted by Elfie and Ted Hinzman three years later.  Shirley lived in Lodi for the remainder of her life and graduated from Lodi High School in 1941.  She subsequently completed a secretarial course at Maud Cornwell’s School for Secretaries in Stockton.  In 1943, she married the love of her life, Albert G. Feikert, who preceded her in death in 1980.

Shirley led a busy and fulfilling life, lovingly raising her family of four children, working as a legal secretary, and serving as president of Needham School PTA, as well as being a founding member of Y'ves Club.  An accomplished pianist, Shirley often shared her talent, playing at numerous functions and clubs throughout the years, including the Emblem Club, among many others.  She was a vivacious and sociable person by nature, loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by her children, Gail Ann Feikert of Stockton, Gary (Patti) Feikert of Santa Rosa, Suzan (Jim) Gillette of West Linn, Oregon, and John (Bernadette) Feikert of Sonora.  Shirley was very proud of her four grandchildren, Neal (Gwen) Starr, Jr. of Nashua, New Hampshire, Claire (Shane) Feikert Moore of McMinnville, Oregon, Marisa Feikert of Santa Rosa, and Noah Feikert of Sonora.  Great-grandchildren Audrey and Lena Starr arrived in 2008 and 2011, respectively.

Al was born in Stockton to Frank and Bruna Rica. He served in the Air Force after graduating from Stockton High School. He later worked for Thermovac Incwhere he was active in the introduction and Papa2growth of 55 gal lined steel drums as sterile shipping containersfor concentrated products for the Canning Industry. In 1966 he and partner Lloyd Hay formed FranRica Inc, named in memory of Al’s late father. A key part of the new company’s early product line was a simplified aseptic Drum Filling system conceived by Al’s father. Valley Tomato Products in Stockton was the first of 14 tomato processing plants the company would have either a complete or a majorrole in designing. A full line of aseptic process and evaporation systems weredeveloped and shipped around the world. Eventually the steel 55 gal drum gave way to less expensive and lower weight plastic containers. A patented improvement to the bag gave birth to the FranRica Bag Filler for 300 gal bag-in-box and 55 gal bag-in drum. Soon nearly all the tomato paste in California, and many spots around the world, was being packed in FranRica bag fillers, as dominating as the 55 gal steel Drum Filler before it. In 1998 the California League of Food Processors presented their Distinguished Service Award to the FranRica founders. The name Al Rica was known everywhere in the world where tomatoes were processed. Al is survived by wife of 52 years Jan, Brother Richard(Jean), daughters Debbie(Wayne), Poppy(Mario) and Cindy.Grand children Jessie, Dorie, Janice (Alex), Joseph (Maria) and Christopher. Great grand children Joshua and Olivia. He waspreceded in death by his mother and father, son Michael and grandson Chris. Betty Elinor Murphy Betty passed away peacefully on December 10, 2015. She was born in Ione, California on March 17, 1920 to Ila Silbole and Jack Leonesio. She is survived by her Murphy.picson Sam Matranga (Yoli), stepdaughters, Sharon Garibaldi, Corie Coleman, and Marilyn Lewis, stepsons, Brandon Murphy and David Murphy, granddaughters, Lisa Matranga, Kelli Ann Gai, Tara Ransfer, Andrea Murphy-Lawton; grandsons Eric Chaney, Todd Garibaldi, Kaleb Lewis, Aaron Murphy, Mathew Murphy, Dennis Murphy and many wonderful great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Eugene Murphy, stepdaughter, Melanie Sue Bowers and grandsons, Mark and Frank Matranga and Ryan Murphy preceded her in death.

Betty was a lifelong resident of Stockton retiring from Pacific Bell after 30 years of service as an office supervisor. She enjoyed connecting with people through many activities. She was a Pink Lady for 30 years at St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary; she was a member of the Lodi Widow Persons Association, the Morada Art & Garden Club and the Philomathean Club.

Mary Margaret Thompson

Mary Margaret "Peggy" Thompson, 53, of Acampo, CA, passed away December 10, 2015 after a battle with colon cancer, in the presence of family and loved ones.Thompson, Mary Peggy was a 1980 graduate of Galt Hight School and went on to earn her LVN from Sacramento City College, where she won the "Most Spirited" award in her class. She worked 35 years at the Golden Living Center in Galt, CA and also spent time volunteering for Children's Dream Works and participating in Relay for Life. Peggy dedicated her free time to completing her "bucket list", which included kayaking, zip-lining, hot air ballooning, pulling pranks on friends and being an "excellent golfer".

Peggy is survived by her husband of 31 years Russell "Rusty" Thompson, daughters Jacquie Nunez (Benny), and Tabatha Thompson (Whitney), two grandchildren Anthony and Azalea Nunez, siblings Howard Garner (Marci), Linda Garner, Michelle Anderson, Jayda Davis (Charlie), Ed Machado, Joe Machado, Julie Greenhalgh (Carl), Tony Machado, Melodee Machado (Greg Seifert) and BFFs Lisa Pollard-Lagomarsino and Teresa O'Bryan.

Ron was a teamster for over 30 years. He was a teacher, a traveler, a nature lover and an avid hiker. He loved all genres of music and never missed watching his favorite team: the San Francisco Giants. He leaves to cherish his memory many family and friends.

Aurelia “Lola” Novillos, 86, of Stockton, California passed away on December 3, 2015 at UC Davis, Sacramento, California.                             Nanay for obituary picture                                     Aurelia was born on December 7, 1928 in Manaoag, Pangasinan, Philippines to Severino and Arcadia Novillos.In 1979, Aurelia moved to Tamuning, Guam, USA, to live alongside her family. In 2000, she moved to Stockton, California, with the youngest of her children to watch her family grow. She is survived by her two elder daughters Virginia Solidum and Emily Cervera and her two sons Arthur Itliong Jr. and Eddie Itliong. She has thirteen grandchildren: Mary Joyce, Kristina, Maybelle, Victor, Jacklord, Michelle, JayR, Marcjay, Melanie, Julianne, Jasmine, Jessa, and Jessica, as well as numerous great-grandchildren.

William Carl Dominik

William Carl Dominik, 90, passed away November 6, 2015. He was born in Lansing, Michigan, June 12, 1925, the son of Mary and Frank Dominik, immigrants from Moravia, and the youngest of William C. Dominik(Record)three children. Joining his father in local polka and dance bands while in junior high school, he played the drums and saxophone before settling in with the clarinet. While still in high school, he also repaired instruments and taught clarinet lessons.

After graduating from high school a semester early in order that he might complete one semester of college before his eighteenth birthday, he was drafted into the Army Airforces during World War II, initially as a clarinetist. When personnel were needed for other positions, he repaired airplanes and served in an office on the base in Prestwick, Scotland. When the war ended, he resumed his studies, earning a Bachelor of Music degree at Michigan State College, where he also taught clarinet. He went on to teach at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, earn a Master of Music degree at the University of Southern California, teach high school, give private music lessons, and work on airplanes for Douglas Aircraft Company.

After completing his master’s degree, he taught at Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Texas A & M University in Kingsville, Texas, before returning to USC to earn his Doctor of Music degree while teaching at California State College at Los Angeles and giving private lessons, as well as teaching ESL part-time at an adult education school in Los Angeles. His clarinet and music training included study with Clark Brody, Robert Marcellus, Kalman Bloch, Joseph Siniscalchi, and Keith Stein. He played in various orchestras, including at Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood in Massachusetts, and appeared as a soloist, clinician, and adjudicator in Midwestern and Western states.

William joined the Conservatory of Music faculty at the University of the Pacific in 1967 as a clarinet and chamber music professor, and served on numerous conservatory and campus-wide committees over the years, including the Conservatory and University Faculty Councils, the University Academic Regulations Committee, and several search and evaluation committees. Upon his retirement, he received the university’s Order of the Pacific and the award of Professor Emeritus.

He was a member of a number of professional organizations, including Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Tau Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Kappa Lambda, the Music Educators National Conference, and the International Clarinet Society, serving as the California State Chair for many years. In addition, he was a member of the Czechoslovak Society of America Fraternal Life.

William traveled extensively with his wife and family throughout Europe, the South Pacific, Australia, and New Zealand, enjoying concerts and museums, studying clarinet teaching, and researching clarinet and chamber music on his sabbaticals. He also enjoyed sailing, hiking, kayaking, history, science, photography, painting, printmaking, and ceramics, continuing to explore new activities and learning about new fields of study.

He is survived by his son William John Dominik, daughter Jane Kathryn Dominik, grandchildren Rebecca Ingram, Frank Dominik, and Laura Dominik, and great granddaughter Katherine. He was pre-deceased by Shirley Anne Dominik, his wife of nearly sixty-two years, elder son Carl James Dominik of Victorville, and grandchildren Tristan and Chantelle Celewych Dominik.

SERVICES

A memorial will be held December 5 at 2 p.m. at Morris Chapel at the University of the Pacific, followed by a reception in the Regents’ Room.

Bonnie Joan Schumacher, 82, of Lodi, passed away November 20, 2015. Born March 19, 1933 in Stuart, Nebraska, Joan attended Galt High School, and later attended Pacific Union College and La Sierra College, earning her Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education. She taught public school in Southern California and Los Angeles for 10 years. Joan met her husband to be, Weldon Schumacher, M.D. in 1957 and was inspired to become a nurse, working for him at his practice. She had a special way of amusing the patients so much that sometimes they wanted to hear her stories more than see the doctor. Joan will be missed by her husband, Weldon Schumacher, M.D., and their daughter, Cindy. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Kelsi Ward and Brian Laughlin, and her sister, Connie Salas.

VISITATION

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 27, 2015 from 2-8pm at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home, 831 E. Industrial Way, Lodi, CA 95240

SERVICES

Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Saturday, November 28, 2015 at English Oaks Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1260 W. Century Blvd, Lodi, Ca.

INTERMENT

Private interment will be held at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi.

Valentine Albert Chaban

Valentine “Val” Albert Chaban 0669_JNP_7014 (2)Valentine “Val” Albert Chaban 82, of Stockton, passed away November 7, 2015. Born in Wisconsin on February 14, 1933, Val proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, graduating from the Spartan School of Aeronautics, and logged over 5400 flight hours during his career. He was awarded the United States of America Air Medal for Meritorious Service in Aerial Flight. Upon retirement from the Air Force, Val selected Stockton, CA to call home and raise his family, and enjoyed a second career with San Joaquin County for 20 years. Upon his 2nd retirement in 1993, he volunteered his time by serving on and later leading, the Honor Guard for Karl Ross Post #16 honoring the fallen veterans by bringing comfort to their families with a flag ceremony and presentation. Val was personally involved in over 2000 veteran memorial services. He was also a member of the Air Force Sergeant’s Association, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.Val will be missed by his children, Valentine Chaban, Andrew Chaban, Caron Lujan (Phil), Linda Guinn (Butch), Lorrie McCann (Martin), Bronwyn Garrett, John Garrett (Kelly), William Garrett (Denise), numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, and his loyal companion and little buddy, Alfie. Val is preceded in death by his wife, Walda L. Chaban, siblings, William Chaban and Florence Richter, and parents, William and Margaretha Chaban. Special thanks to Dr. Medhi and his compassionate staff, and all of Val's family, friends, and neighbors.
