Jessie Hannay

Jessie2[19621].jpeg

Stockton native Jessie G. Hannay passed away at home on November 28, 2020, two months after her 100th birthday.

Jessie was born and raised in Stockton, where she received a BA in Education from College of the Pacific and embarked upon a career as an elementary school teacher.  She later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Columbia University and taught in both San Francisco and Daly City.  At her home at Plymouth Square in Stockton, Jessie (a life-long Methodist) enjoyed playing the piano for religious services.  Jessie was a big fan of pets, especially cats.  She had pets almost all her life, and her cat “Dickens” was instrumental in encouraging Jessie to recover from illness several years ago.  Jessie was the much beloved Best Aunt Ever to her five nieces, who certainly knew how lucky they were to have her.  She (all by herself) even braved taking all five of them to Disneyland when they were young children.  What aunt would take that on!  Jessie was recently honored when her great-grandnephew was named after her: Lucas Jesse McCray.  Jessie couldn’t have been prouder.  She was an absolutely wonderful woman who was cherished by many!  She will be missed.

Jessie is survived by her five nieces Kathryn Hannay (husband Tom McCray), Adriane Antonelli (husband Robert), Dustyn, Anne Cammack (husband Michael) and Alison Grey (husband Roger), as well as by her 7 great- and great-grand nieces and nephews.

Cherokee Memorial is honored to serve the Hannay Family.

Jose Fonseca

March 19, 1960 - November 26, 2020

Jose G. Fonseca was born in Redwood City, California. He was the youngest of five children born to Jesus and Maria Dolores Fonseca. The family moved to Stockton in 1973 and then to Acampo in 1991 where he lived until his passing at age 60. He was preceded in death by his loving parents;  he is survived by his son, Christopher Pratt of Leavenworth, Wa., and siblings, Maria Fonseca-Cole (John) of Redwood City, Ca., Jess Fonseca of Minden Nv., Teresa Fonseca-Schmidt (Dennis) of Galt, Ca., and Luis Fonseca of Acampo, Ca.

His dream was always to live in the country and that dream was realized in 1991. He loved working outdoors with his hands,  fixing small machines, equipment, and vehicles. He also enjoyed  carving wood, drawing, word puzzles, helping his neighbors, and watching classic movies. We recently nicknamed him "show tunes" for his tendency to hum tunes from those classics he loved to watch.

The highlight of Jose's year was deer season hunting trips with brothers, Jess and Luie and cousins, Joseph and Carlos. Yearly deer season hunting  trips is a tradition started by his dad, Jesus, in the early 1960's ; as each son got old enough for gun safety and hunting license classes, the initiation into the sport of deer hunting began.  Over the years, the group of "hunters" grew to include Jose's son, Chris, and other "good time loving" relatives and friends. We knew they all had a great time but they would never admit to exactly what that  "great time" was.  We can only imagine and Jose for one, kept their secrets.

Jose loved his family, family parties, and mariachi music. He loved his nieces, nephews, and great nephews alike, but, he had a special place in his heart for his nieces Candida, Christina, Gabriela, Maria, Marian, and Emma.  A true lover of the outdoors, he was pleased that his family loved camping and fishing. In June 2019, he was able to attend a family campout and what fun it was to have him with us. While the rest of us would show Jose pictures of trout we caught on other trips which he would look at rather skeptically (in a loving way of course), it was the pictures that Marian shared of her hunts that really caught his attention.

Just as Jose loved his family, his family loved him.  He was funny and made us laugh and smile, but more than that, he was generous, caring, a good listener, and a beloved son, father, and brother. We can't put into words how much he will be missed by us all. Jose bravely faced his health issues over the last three years. We almost lost him last December but the good Lord decided to bless us with a miracle and leave him in our care for almost another year. What an incredible gift to have been given that opportunity.

Thank you Luie, for having cared for Jose every day with love and a sense of humor that lightened his spirit. You and Jose shared a bond that cannot be broken even though he is no longer physically with us. He loved you as you will always love him. Thank you to Dr. Victor Rodriguez and the UCD Medical Center CTICU staff for the selfless, tireless, exceptional, and compassionate care provided to Jose.

Jose, hermanito, may you rest in peace with our Lord Jesus Christ. We love you.

Robert Pollock Hartzell (86) passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on November 21, 2020.

Born April 16, 1934 in San Rafael, California, Bob began his university studies at UC Berkley. He was one of the original “Twinkling Tubas” in the Cal Marching Band. Bob transferred to UC Davis graduating with a B.S. in Plant Sciences. He was a brother in the fraternity of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Following a stint in the U.S. Army, Bob worked as an agronomist for Tillie Lewis Foods in Stockton where he helped to introduce Roma tomatoes to the U.S. market as well as moving tomato harvesting from hand-picked to a mechanized harvest. Under Governor Ronald Reagan, he served as Deputy Director of the Department of Food and Agriculture for the state of California. Following that post, Bob worked with the Iran-California Farming Company to develop desert lands for growing crops for the European market, and in Indonesia developing palm oil production. Bringing his professional life back to U.S. soil, he was co-owner of the  Murphy’s Historic Hotel in the foothills of California where he led the restoration efforts for the historic property. For 18 years, Bob served as Executive Director of the California Association of Wine Grape Growers (CAWG) working tirelessly to promote the wines of California receiving recognition from the United States House of Representatives for his contributions to the wine industry.

One of Bob’s personal passions was music, and he was an accomplished pianist and organist. In addition to these instruments, he also played the bass fiddle in the Stockton Symphony Orchestra.  He was instrumental in the restoration and installation of the theater pipe organ in the Bob Hope Theater in Stockton as well as the theater pipe organ at Ironstone Vineyards. Bob fulfilled his dream of combining agriculture, wine, and pipe organ music when he purchased the 2/11 Robert Morton Theater Pipe Organ that was originally installed in San Francisco’s Castro Theatre in 1987, followed by the vineyard property on which he built the complex which would house the organ. The culmination of this dream was co-founding Harmony Wynelands with his wife Linda. He loved to entertain family, friends, and visitors by playing requests on the pipe organ.

Just a few of Bob’s significant professional and personal distinctions are The Award of Distinction from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Science at UC Davis (1998), the Stockton Arts Commission Service Award (2013), the Fox Bob Hope Theatre Meritorious Service Award (2006), Lodi District Chamber of Commerce Agribusiness Person of the Year (1997). His great love of his community led to serving on many boards and committees including The San Joaquin Historical Society, The International Order of the Knights of the Vine (Founding Member-Lodi Chapter), Rotary International, the Order of the Masonic Lodge.
