Juanita Rossi

May 9, 1922 - December 30, 2018

Cherokee Memorial is honored to serve the Rossi family.

At the age of 96, after a long and rich life, our Mom (Grammy), Juanita Rossi, passed peacefully on December 30, 2018.
Juanita was born in Oakland CA. on May 9, 1922 and grew-up in McCloud, a small Northern California town at the base of Mt. Shasta, where she met and married her high school sweat- heart Gino Rossi over 80 years ago.
After Gino’s return from World War II, they moved from McCloud to Stockton, CA. in 1951, where they raised their two daughters Gail Johnson (deceased) and Janice Heine. She is survived by two sons-in-law: Don “Pete” Johnson and Wayne Heine. Additionally, she is survived by four granddaughters: Kelly Horch ( Rudy), Terry Martel ( Rick), Jackie Gore (Todd) and Jessica Heine. She is also survived by six great granddaughters: Tiffany Horch, Priscilla Yoder, McKenzie Martel, Ashlee Gore, Alyssa Gore, Audrey Gore; and one great grandson: Anthony Herrera.
She is remembered for her love of family, friends and always providing a warm and welcoming home. Her interests included golfing, gardening, and cooking. For may years she was a member of the “9 Holer’s” at Swenson Park Golf Course. Juanita and Gino shared a love of music and enjoyed listing and dancing to the Big Band music of the 30’s and 40’s. Her pleasant manner, loving demeanor, and sense of humor were hallmark characteristics of her personality. She will truly be missed by both family and friends.
The family would like to extend it’s sincerest thank you and warmest wishes to the Hospice of San Joaquin medical team: Tami, Ashley, Michelle, Adrian, Mary and Angela, who provided “Grammy” thoughtful, kind and professional care as she completed her “slow walk to Heaven”.

A visitation will be held on Monday, January 7th, 2019 from 9:00am - 10:00am in the Evergreen Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park, located off  Highway 99 at Harney Lane, Lodi CA, 95240.

George Gus Spanos

September 21, 1924 - December 29, 2018

George Gus Spanos, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to all, passed away on December 29, 2018 at the age of 94, surrounded by his family. George was born and raised in Stockton, California where he spent most of his adult life. He lived the last four years in Walnut Creek, California, where he and his wife, Mary Boonos Spanos, moved to be near many of their grandchildren.

Born September 21, 1924, George Gus Spanos was one of six children raised by Evanthia and Constantino "Gus" Spanos, pioneer Greek immigrants who came to this country in the early 1900's to pursue the "American Dream". Waking up at dawn and working at his father's bakery every morning before school and selling newspapers on street corners through the Great Depression, George and his brothers at an early age experienced the entrepreneurial drive of their father while learning the importance of hard work, education and discipline.

George enlisted in the Navy during World War II, defending our country as part of the "Greatest Generation". He was a naval officer and flight navigator as well as a champion "light-weight" wrestler. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and the College of the Pacific, and received his law degree from Hastings College of the Law in 1949. George returned to Stockton, eventually setting up his own private law practice in partnership with Harvey Hakeem and later with Harvey's son Michael. George provided early legal assistance to his brother Alex's growing business and eventually left private practice to join his brother full time as General Counsel for his rapidly growing real estate development company, A.G. Spanos Construction, which eventually became the largest apartment builder in the nation.

It was in 1955 that George met his partner for life, Mary Boonos. Although their families knew each other for many years, George and Mary did not meet until they both attended a dance in Modesto, where Mary grew up. They married in 1956 and created a loving partnership that lasted for 62 years.

George was active in the Stockton community. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Stockton Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. He was actively involved in St. Basil's Greek Orthodox Church and a member of the Order of AHEPA. He had a passion for gardening and played racquetball for over 50 years, well into his 80's. A "lefty" and force to be reckoned with on-court, he twice won the San Joaquin County Open Racquetball Championship. Additionally, George was an avid Los Angeles Charger football fan. George was a student of history and taught his family the importance of their Greek heritage. He was a man of limitless love, genuine kindness and compassion, strength and integrity, humility and gentleness, loyalty and faith. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to follow their dreams and to venture out into the world, providing his love, support and guidance along the way.

George is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his three children Evanthia (Steven Austin) of Orinda, Andrea (Luigi Ottieri) of Santa Barbara, and Gus (Martha) of Alamo; grandchildren Ariana and Helena Austin, Alejandro and George Spanos; step grandchildren Mia, Tim, Luisa, Bobby and Mia Catherine; sisters Stella Graham and Madeline Madsen; and countless nieces and nephews. George's death closely follows the recent passing two months ago of his brother Alex and earlier by brothers Danny and Leo. The family wishes to thank George's caregivers who provided loving and devoted care over the last several years and few months: Mercedes Hape, Evelyn Brody, Mimi Voltaire, Edward Manolo, Cooky and Frederick. George lived a selfless life giving to his family, colleagues, community, church and friends. His wise counsel, infectious smile, mischievous sense of humor and twinkling blue eyes will be missed.

SERVICE
The Trisagion service will be held on Monday, January 14th at 6pm at St. Basil's Greek Orthodox Church, 920 West March Lane, Stockton. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 15th at 10am, also at St. Basil's Greek Orthodox Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the St. Basil's Greek Orthodox Church Scholarship Fund.

Carl Hoover

May 24, 1954 - December 26, 2018

Carl G. Hoover was born in Stockton, CA on May 24, 1954 and passed away on December 26, 2018 after fighting a long battle in the hospital.

Carl retired from General Mills after thirty years of working. He enjoyed spending his days babysitting his grandchildren and great granddaughter and loved attending their sporting events. Carl was a family man and enjoyed family barbeques. He also loved to play dice with friends at the local pub. Carl had a kind spirit and was loved by all.

Carl is survived by his mother Agnes Hale; his children Wayne Hoover, Kevin (Karen) Hoover, and Michelle (David) Fowler; five grandchildren Brittany Maimone, Destany and Austin Hoover, Trevor and Cloey Fowler; one great granddaughter Samantha Hill; four sisters, three brothers, thirteen nieces and eleven nephews.
Carl is preceded in death by his father Wilbert C. Hoover.


A viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 12 to 8:00 p.m. and a Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 1:00 p.m.; both at Cherokee Memorial Vineyard Chapel, 14165 N. Beckman Road, Lodi, CA.

Mary O’Sullivan

May 18, 1949 – December 27, 2018

Cherokee Memorial is honored to serve the O’Sullivan family.


Mary was born in Stockton, CA to Manuel & Jennie Moran.  She married Darrell O’Sullivan in 1969 and began married life in Fresno.  Even though she suffered from Parkinson’s Disease for over 30 years, she was a strong, loving, woman who raised 3 beautiful daughters and worked hard to support and guide them into adulthood.  She retired from San Joaquin Co. after 13 yrs.  

She was a member of Lodi Community Art Center, the Lodi Parkinson’s Support Group, Elk Grove Artists and Lodi Rock Steady Boxing (Parkinson’s Therapy). She loved family gatherings, mysteries, and especially young children and arts & crafts.

She is survived by her husband Darrell and 3 children – Cecilia (Neil Matz) O’Sullivan, Tracie (Jacob) Thornburg and Mary Elizabeth (Tadd) Heinz and 5 grandchildren – Ethan, Sydney & Riley Matz and Aiden & Addison Thornburg.  She is also survived by 3 sisters – Cecilia (Albert Taylor) Moran, Nellie (James) Welsh, Jeanette (Gary) Ratliff and 3 brothers – Manuel (Helen) Moran, Albert (Germaine) Moran and Robert (Tina) Moran. She is pre-deceased by her parents Manuel and Jennie Moran, her sister Carmen Sato, Earl Sato (brother-in-law) and Paul & Gabriel Sato (nephews).

VISITATION:

Visitation is Jan. 6, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Cherokee Memorial Vineyard Chapel, Lodi, CA. 

SERVICES:

Memorial Services are at 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 7, also at Cherokee Memorial Vineyard Chapel, followed by burial at Cherokee Memorial Cemetery.

Dorothy Dorsett

Dorothy M. Dorsett, age 97, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2018 in Concord, California. Dorothy was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on October 29, 1921. She married her husband of 53 years, Orval Dorsett, on January 3, 1941 in California. They had three daughters, Shirley Premo, Sheila Zoerner (Charlie), and Sandra Frank (Paul). Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by her daughters and six grandchildren; Todd Premo, Tracy Speed, Meghan Mariman, Martin Conley, Tyson Frank, Bethany Bonaserra, and ten great-grandchildren.

The graveside service for Dorothy will be held on Friday January 11, 2019 at 11:00am in Cherokee Memorial Park, located at Harney Lane at Hwy 99, Lodi, CA 95240.

Richard Parkison

 

October 4th, 1929 - December 24th, 2018

On Monday, December 24, 2018, Richard J. Parkison, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away at age 89.


Dick was born in Shawnee, KS, on Oct. 4, 1929. He later moved to Fairfield, CA as a teenager. After High School he served his Country in the Navy Reserves. Always an entrepreneur, he began doing hair and eventually opened his own business, RJ's Beauty Salon, which he ran successfully for many years on the Miracle Mile in Stockton. Later he would own Aaron's Beauty Care Supply.

Dick, not one to sit idle, enjoyed hunting in his early years. Later he liked to spend time on his "Acres", land he owned in Oregon. He was always busy--and worked hard building his home and barn, while tending to his walnut grove, with help from friends and family. The barn was a creative space for him where he worked on rebuilding classic cars to show. His love of work, working with his hands in particular, was nurtured by a connection to Native American Culture. He believed in their principles and tried to "live right". Dick is preceded in death by his son Clifford and grandson, Josh. He is survived by his wife
Rachel, daughter Deborah, and grandsons Rick, William and Alex.

A memorial service will be held for Richard on Thursday, January 10th, 2019, at 1:00pm in the Vineyard Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park, located at 14165 N. Beckman Road, Lodi CA, 95240.

Cherokee Memorial is honored to serve the Taber family.

In loving memory of Esther M. Taber who went to be with the Lord and join the “Love of her life” William R. Taber III on Dec. 23, 2018.  Born Oct. 2, 1923 to Charles and Minnie Bishop in Canandaigua, New York.  She graduated from Canandaigua Academy High School in 1941and continued her education to receive her RN in 1944.  She served as a 1st Lieutenant during WWII in the Army Nurse Corps in Bremerhaven Germany until 1947.  Following her discharge, she earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Buffalo, New York in 1949.  

Esther and William met while working at the VA Hospital in Canandaigua, New York, then married in Aug. 1950.  They moved to Pomona, CA in 1955 where she worked at the Pomona Valley Community Hospital until she retired and moved to Valley Springs, CA in 1989.  

She was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Valley Springs where she served as pianist/organist and also a member of the United Methodist Women’s Group.  She volunteered for the Calaveras Public Health Dept., Cancer Dressing Group sponsored by Eastern Star.  She was also a member of the VSABA.  

Esther was preceded in death by her “sweetheart” William R. Taber III and her parents, Charles and Minnie Bishop.  

She is survived by her 4 children: William R. Taber IV (Marlene) Chino, CA, Carolyn Thorp (Bill Eldridge) Clarksville, TN, Barbara Price (Ralph) Tracy, CA, Nancy Miller (Charles) Pomona, CA. Brother Charles Bishop (Ruth) Canandaigua, NY, Brother-in-law Lloyd Taber (Pat) Dallas, OR.  Additionally, 10 Grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  

She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend whose heart was full of love for everyone.

 A celebration of life will be held in Valley Springs at a later date to be announced.  Memorial donations may be made to Community United Methodist Church, 135 Laurel St., Valley Springs, CA  95252.

Alice Anderson

 

June 3, 1921 - December 23, 2018

Alice Marie Anderson of Morada passed away on Dec. 23, 2018, at the age of 97. Born in Murfreesboro, TN, she attended Ripon High School, Modesto Junior College, and worked for Catholic Charities' Refugee Resettlement program. She was a pillar of Central United Methodist Church and a proud member of PEO. She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Ralph, and is survived by three children: Miles, Fredrika, and Andrea; her sister, Lorelle; and five granddaughters: Sonja, Alexis, Alison, Meredith, and Beth.

SERVICE
A Memorial Service will be held at Central United Methodist Church in Stockton on Saturday, January 19th, 2019 at 1:00 p.m.

Gerald Baldwin

March 8, 1938 - December 21, 2018

Gerald (Gerry) G Baldwin Sr. passed away peacefully at his home on December 21, 2018. Gerry was born March 8, 1938 in San Francisco to the late Blaine and Adel Baldwin. He was a beloved Son, Brother, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. He spent his younger years growing up in San Francisco and Placerville, CA.

He was a respected member of Quail Lakes Baptist Church, The Rotary Club, and worked with the Boys and Girls Club of Stockton. Gerry retired after 34 years as the Vice President and Manager of Bank of the West, formally Union Safe Deposit Bank after a well respected career where he was loved by his customers and became close friends to many.

Gerry is preceded in death by his daughter Shelly Covello and survived by his children, Sherry McCleary and Gerry Baldwin Jr., 5 Grandchildren, 4 Great Grandchildren, brother Sonny Arnold and wife Glory, and former spouse and longtime friend June Baldwin.
