Patricia Winterberg

December 30th, 1926 - January 8th, 2019

Winterberg, Patricia photo.jpeg

Patricia Hamilton Winterberg died peacefully, surrounded by family on January 8, 2019 at the age of 92. Pat, as her friends knew her, was born in San Jose, CA to Rev. Hugh K. and Gladys (Manweiler) Hamilton. For the first few years of life she lived in various cities in California including Lodi, Sacramento and Visalia, where she met the love of her life, Bob (Bud). They attended Visalia Union High School together, where he proposed at graduation knowing that he would soon be joining the Navy. After their marriage in 1946 she attended Visalia Junior College and worked at JC Penney. Pat moved with Bob to Fort Benning, GA, Indianapolis, IN and Tacoma, WA, before settling in Stockton, CA. where they attended College of the Pacific.

Pat was a member of the Dameron Hospital Auxiliary and Assistance League of Stockton as well as Lincoln Presbyterian Church. She loved to travel, attend UOP sporting events and to trace her family’s ancestry. If you wanted to know your lineage, she was the person to turn to. Pat was the ideal woman for Bob. She played the “behind the scenes” roll in his many community activities and work related events. She tried to stay out of the limelight while still being strong and supportive. Her greatest joy was being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and sharing in their many achievements and activities.

Pat is survived by 3 daughters, Deborah Roscelli (Alan), Jody Council (Jeffrey) and Lynette Dillard (Bill), 6 grandchildren, Matthew Witt, Wendy Wold (Jeremy), Crystal Dillard, Matthew Council (Amanda), April Ingwersen (Jason), Melisa Young (Daniel), and 10 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Robert Winterberg, and brother Quincy Hamilton preceded her in death.

At Pat’s request, no public memorial will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Robert R. Winterberg Outstanding Senior Award, Eberhardt School of Business, University of the Pacific, 3601 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA 95211 or to Hospice of San Joaquin.

Bobbie Witham

October 5, 1934 - January 6, 2019

“I am honored to take a moment to tell you about the life of our incredible Mother.  It is a life that is lovingly remembered.”

Bobbie Jane Reeder was born in Kentucky October 5, 1934. Had wonderful parents Obie and Ruby Reeder. A couple years later she had a sister Billie Marie.

She got married to George Eastham in 1955 and had 3 children, Debra Terry Eastham, Cynthia Ann Eastham and Joseph Paul Eastham. George and Bobbie divorced, and she married Arlan Witham.  In 1964 they had one child, Christine Ann Witham. The whole family moved to California. Lived in Santa Rosa for a bit and then moved to Lodi California. Her and Arlan later divorced.

I remember that my mother always worked hard, was dedicated to anything she did. She worked as a Secretary for many years but found a factory job at the PCP can plant which she just totally loved and continued there until she retired in 2001. Mom was a task master. She taught us at a young age responsibility, accountability, to respect ourselves and others. She was also a pet lover, we had cats and dogs to love and take care of all our lives. She was always a very thoughtful person teaching us this also.

Mom always told us wonderful stories of her young life, planting gardens (which she also taught us), learning to drive with her Dad, the fun she had in high school, going to Coney Island, going to dances, the list goes on.

She also went through some very trying times in her life. The passing of her Father in 1964, her son Paul in 1976, her daughter Christine in 1986, Mother Ruby in 1994, sister Billie in 1998. She persevered and just kept going. She was a strong woman and that taught us to be strong.

In 2002 Mom was diagnosed with dementia and then just a few years later the dreaded diagnoses of Alzheimer’s. As she slipped away slowly to a place we didn’t know, we could tell that 99% of the time she was in a happy place. She would still sing, whistle and talk even though we didn’t understand her words. It didn’t matter to us, as long as she was happy, and we could still see her smiling face.

Today we no longer see that smile…..

If you would like to honor our Mom, Bobbie Jane Witham please contribute in her name to

George Gus Spanos

September 21, 1924 - December 29, 2018

George Gus Spanos, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to all, passed away on December 29, 2018 at the age of 94, surrounded by his family. George was born and raised in Stockton, California where he spent most of his adult life. He lived the last four years in Walnut Creek, California, where he and his wife, Mary Boonos Spanos, moved to be near many of their grandchildren.

Born September 21, 1924, George Gus Spanos was one of six children raised by Evanthia and Constantino "Gus" Spanos, pioneer Greek immigrants who came to this country in the early 1900's to pursue the "American Dream". Waking up at dawn and working at his father's bakery every morning before school and selling newspapers on street corners through the Great Depression, George and his brothers at an early age experienced the entrepreneurial drive of their father while learning the importance of hard work, education and discipline.

George enlisted in the Navy during World War II, defending our country as part of the "Greatest Generation". He was a naval officer and flight navigator as well as a champion "light-weight" wrestler. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and the College of the Pacific, and received his law degree from Hastings College of the Law in 1949. George returned to Stockton, eventually setting up his own private law practice in partnership with Harvey Hakeem and later with Harvey's son Michael. George provided early legal assistance to his brother Alex's growing business and eventually left private practice to join his brother full time as General Counsel for his rapidly growing real estate development company, A.G. Spanos Construction, which eventually became the largest apartment builder in the nation.

It was in 1955 that George met his partner for life, Mary Boonos. Although their families knew each other for many years, George and Mary did not meet until they both attended a dance in Modesto, where Mary grew up. They married in 1956 and created a loving partnership that lasted for 62 years.

George was active in the Stockton community. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Stockton Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. He was actively involved in St. Basil's Greek Orthodox Church and a member of the Order of AHEPA. He had a passion for gardening and played racquetball for over 50 years, well into his 80's. A "lefty" and force to be reckoned with on-court, he twice won the San Joaquin County Open Racquetball Championship. Additionally, George was an avid Los Angeles Charger football fan. George was a student of history and taught his family the importance of their Greek heritage. He was a man of limitless love, genuine kindness and compassion, strength and integrity, humility and gentleness, loyalty and faith. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to follow their dreams and to venture out into the world, providing his love, support and guidance along the way.

George is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his three children Evanthia (Steven Austin) of Orinda, Andrea (Luigi Ottieri) of Santa Barbara, and Gus (Martha) of Alamo; grandchildren Ariana and Helena Austin, Alejandro and George Spanos; step grandchildren Mia, Tim, Luisa, Bobby and Mia Catherine; sisters Stella Graham and Madeline Madsen; and countless nieces and nephews. George's death closely follows the recent passing two months ago of his brother Alex and earlier by brothers Danny and Leo. The family wishes to thank George's caregivers who provided loving and devoted care over the last several years and few months: Mercedes Hape, Evelyn Brody, Mimi Voltaire, Edward Manolo, Cooky and Frederick. George lived a selfless life giving to his family, colleagues, community, church and friends. His wise counsel, infectious smile, mischievous sense of humor and twinkling blue eyes will be missed.
