Margaret Hillious

March 23, 1939 - May 26, 2022

Margaret Dolores Springer Jones Hillious was a very special person. Born March 1934, she lived to be 83. She had her daughter at her side when she passed on May 26th 2022. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, a talented and beloved educator.

Marge was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she lived until she was 2 years old and orphaned. She then was adopted by her great-aunt Mary Jones of Vallejo, California and grew up alongside her nephews. After high school she became a Catholic Nun named “Sister Paul” and devoted her life to God. It was at this time that she went to college and received a degree in teaching. Marge had taught in Southern California for 11 years when she felt the Lord calling her elsewhere. She moved to Calaveras County where she taught 25 years before she retired. Marge was introduced to Robert Hillious, thanks to her soon to be sister-in-law Eileen Hillious, in 1976 and they married almost right away. They lived a very happy life until he passed in 2002.

Marge would often share memories of her teaching days with her grandchildren; reminiscing on the joy it brought her. She had befriended many of her past students on Facebook and enjoyed seeing their lives now and the adults they had become. To her students she was known as Ms. Jones or Mrs. Hillious. Marge was only 4’9 and a 1/2”’s small but mighty. A loving and supportive teacher to her “kids”, her students. Some would say, the best teacher they ever had and a gift from God. Marge played the guitar in her younger years. One student said God needed another guitar player in Heaven.

She and Robert loved to gamble and watch football together. She enjoyed playing video games with her grandkids. Gma Marge was known as the “Donkey Kong Champ!”

In 2012 Marge was reunited with her long lost brothers Robert and Charles Springer. They had been separated as children when they went into the orphanage. She looked for her brothers for years without any luck. They had been looking for her as well. It was her niece, Rusty Springer Rodriguez of Southern California, who reunited all of them. This was a wish she always had as a child and she was blessed to see it come true in her lifetime thanks to her niece Rusty.

Marge was preceded in death by her Mother and Father, Barbara and Robert Springer of Tennessee, her husband Robert Hillious of Lodi, California, her brothers, Robert Springer of California and Charles Springer of North Carolina, her children Elizabeth Hillious and Larry Hillious.

Marge will be remembered and is survived by many including: her daughter Cheryl Hillious Ellison and son-in-law Brian Ellison. Grandchildren: Magenta McNabb, Connie & Konrad Schwartz, Jesse and Mackenzie Ellison, Sabrina and Micheal Jeffcoat, and Becky Hillious. Great Grandchildren: Coral and Lauren Ellison, Wyatt and Westin Schwartz, Karin Jeffcoat, Alex Hillious and a few more. Hillious Family: Eileen Hillious, Stacy and Bill Huneke and the Springer Family nieces and nephews. Life long friends and so many students!

Ruth Inez Withee “Mimi”, age 92, passed away on May 25, 2022 in Stockton CA. She was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and worshipped at the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Stockton for many years.

Ruth was born on December 29, 1929 in West Palm Beach, FL to James Ralston “Jack” and Gladys (Gray) Moore. She loved to talk about her childhood in Florida — especially her grandmother’s cooking, her unusual pets (including a squirrel and an alligator), and the beautiful fruit and flowers that were available year-round.

After high school, Ruth attended college in New Jersey where she studied to be a teacher. She was outstanding in her vocation and loved and believed in each of her students. Some of her best memories were working in Chicago, where one of her favorite places to visit was the old Chicago Library and where she and her class would travel to field trips on the “L”.

Ruth married George A. Withee Jr. in 1959 and they had five children together. When he died in 1967, she returned to the classroom and taught in Oakland and Pacifica for 25 years. After serving as a nanny for several years, she retired, having invested in the lives of thousands of children over the course of her career.

Ruth raised five children as a single mother. Her perseverance and strength were an inspiration to all who knew her. After she retired, her great joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She celebrated their talents and bragged about them to anyone who would listen.

Ruth is survived by her children: Georgia (Bobb) Joseph of Brookfield Wisconsin and grandchildren Kerrigan (Laura), Reid (Kim), and Lydia; Marian Gomez and grandchildren Erik, Ryan, and Tyler (Kelsey); Robert (Patty) Withee of Stockton, CA and grandchildren Melissa (Ben), Patrick, and Kyle; Jay Withee (Ambi Tandel) of Sacramento, CA; and George Mitchell (Susan) of Fountain Hills, AZ. She is also survived by sisters Mary Ballard of Connecticut and Jacqueline Hiers of Florida, and four great-grandchildren whose video antics brought her great joy in the last weeks of her life.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband, George A. Withee Jr. and a son, Ronald Withee. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Windsor Hampton Care Center and St. Joseph Medical Center for their care of Ruth during her final illness.

Barbara Taylor

September 6, 1933 - May 16, 2022

Barbara Taylor, a resident of Lodi for nearly two decades, an active Lodi Police Partner for 17 years and a volunteer Chaplain with the Lodi Police for 11 years, passed away quietly May 16 in hospice care in Union City, CA.

Born to James Harris and Gertrude Moore Harris in Olathe, Colorado, she grew up in Colorado, Washington, Arizona, and the San Francisco Bay Area, graduating from San Leandro High School.  She married for the first time at age 17 and, with Pete Shofner, had 3 children.  They resided in San Leandro and Livermore for a number of years.  In addition to owning and operating a bar for awhile, she held a variety of jobs in the Bay Area.

She later married Al Little, moving to Southern California where she continued to work a variety of primarily clerical and accounting jobs, leading to a longtime position in Accounts Payable for Kaiser Permanente.  While living in Southern California she joined Alcoholics Anonymous to overcome her addiction problems, and would have been celebrating 50 years of sobriety this coming February.  She and her third husband, Gene Taylor, were very active in Southern California AA events while still living there.  Both also became active in the Agape International Spiritual Ministry, and she became a Licensed Spiritual Practitioner.

Upon retiring from Kaiser Permanente, and following the Northridge Earthquake, she and Gene moved to Lodi to be closer to her daughter, youngest son, and grandchildren.  Both she and Gene became volunteers in the Lodi Police Partners. Gene subsequently died of a heart attack while directing traffic on the Fourth of July in 1999.    Barbara took on additional responsibilities as a volunteer Chaplain with the police department, and also wrote a weekly column for the Lodi Sentinel profiling city workers.

Following the death of her daughter, she met and chatted online with Robert Hughes of Fremont, CA.  Discovering they had several things in common -- both being Kaiser Permanente retirees, passionate baseball fans, and devotees of classic country/western music -- they dated for awhile.  She subsequently moved in with him in Fremont for the last decade of her life, until requiring Assisted Living and then hospice care for her chronic health issues.

She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Gertrude Harris; her brother Jim Harris; all three husbands, Pete Shofner, Al Little, and Gene Taylor; and her daughter Linda Shofner Alvarado.  She is survived by her sons and their wives Jesse (Jennifer) Shofner of Tennessee, James (Darlene) Shofner of Manteca; her granddaughter and husband  Natalie (Kyle) Petersen of Central Point, OR,  and three great grandchildren Matthew, Brayden, and Ayla Petersen; grandson Zachary Alvarado, of Sacramento; grandson and wife Joseph (Kim) Shofner of Wanguri, Australia, and three great grandsons, Felomeno, Joaquim, and Khailan; grandson and wife Kevin (Jessica) Shofner of Manteca and three great grandchildren, Mia, Selena, and Jayden; and domestic partner Robert Hughes of Fremont.
