Elinore Brecht

April 11, 1932 - October 13, 2022

A life spent confronting sorrow, caring for others in their greatest times of need and creating a faith-filled home ended when Elinore Kasper Brecht joined the many angels of her life on Oct. 13, 2022.

Elinore Kasper was the last of six children born on a farmstead outside Golden Valley, N.D., to Ukrainian immigrants August and Amalia Kasper. She recalled sleeping in the barn loft on warm summer nights, and how a single stove warmed the house during cold prairie winters.

August passed in 1938 followed by Amelia in 1941, leaving 9-year-old Elinore in the care of relatives in Bismarck. She learned the pain of loss but also the strength of faith and how to rely on herself.

She attended a boarding school in Dickinson, where she completed a year of college and was assigned to teach younger students. But Elinore made frequent visits to Golden Valley, where she often encountered Keith Cornelius “KC” Brecht, who had been born on a farm 7 miles from the Kasper farm.

By 1951, she was working as a switchboard operator in Tacoma, Wash. That’s where Keith’s frequent letters, mailed from Korea where he served in the Navy, found her. Upon his discharge, Keith joined his mother in Lodi and the correspondence continued. Soon, Elinore arrived in Lodi on a bus from Tacoma, moving in with Keith’s Aunt Norene. Soon enough, Elinore and KC were married.

While Elinore worked in banking, Keith found his calling with the Stockton Fire Department. They moved to a home east of the University of the Pacific, where KC’s brother Jim was a frequent guest.

Tammy, Elinore and KC’s only child, arrived in 1961. She was Elinore’s everlasting project. She never missed one of Tammy’s St. Mary’s performances (under the inspired direction of Joan Topp), and every Sunday she and KC would accompany Tammy to St. Luke’s, where she played the organ. Their lives revolved around church, school and the fire department.

Each summer, KC, Elinore and Tammy drove to North Dakota to spend weeks working on family farms, fishing, celebrating and renewing family bonds. They often stayed with Deen and Leona Brecht, and later at the home of Deen and Darlene Brecht and their children David, Dawn and Dustin. Sometimes they would help make repairs on the old Brecht farm with help from nieces and nephews Deen, Danny, Bonnie and Lee John.

Throughout her life, Elinore responded when others were in need. When refugees began to arrive from Vietnam, she worked with a church group to ensure they were fed, clothed and had clean lodging.

When niece Bonnie Stern contracted breast cancer, Elinore flew to North Dakota to care for Bonnie’s sons Casey and John and her husband Myron.

It was through Bonnie, Elinore often said, that she learned to believe in angels. When John was married, it was his Aunt Elinore he asked to accompany him down the aisle.

Luann Hyde helped Tammy find a job at the Stockton Record where she met reporter Mike Dunbar. They were married in 1985, and Elinore’s first grandchild – Maggie Amalia – was born in 1989. William Shelby Brecht Dunbar followed in 1991, providing Elinore two new projects.

KC and Elinore were season-ticket holders for UOP basketball, often attending with John and Debbie Agello – who continued to take Elinore to games after KC’s death in 2014. During that time, Elinore got a call almost every day from Elouise Schneider – “just to check in” on her close friend.

Years ago, she chose her pall bearers – all women, because she knew the strength of women. Most are gone now, but she wanted Elouise, Darlene and Debbie to help carry her into the next life.

Elinore was preceded in death by her parents, husband Keith, and brothers Jake and Tony and sisters Frieda, Erna, June and Billie. She will be buried, with the remains of Keith wrapped in her arms, at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi. A service will be conducted Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. at the Cherokee Park’s Vineyard chapel.

Elinore Kasper Brecht withstood enormous hardships but emerged with an everlasting faith in God and a devotion to helping others. She expressed that love through unflinching and clear-eyed service and devotion. She loved deeply and was deeply loved.

Norma Clay

February 23, 1927 - October 12, 2022

Norma Clay was born February 1927 in East Long Meadow, Massachusetts. She was the fourth of five children and grew up during the Great Depression, which had a lasting impact on her throughout her life.

In May of 1944, Norma attended nursing school for the US Army in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated in 1948 and continued her education to earn her bachelor's degree in Nursing, graduating alongside her oldest daughter, Donna, in the 1990’s.

With the war over and no available nursing jobs on the East Coast, she and four of her fellow graduates rode the California Zephyr to San Joaquin County. They not only began their new nursing careers but also enjoyed many adventures together.

While working at San Joaquin General Hospital, she met and married Doyle Clay and together they had four children. David (Dorothy), twins Doyle (Shelley) and Donna (Rocky), and Diane (Mario). They were blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

During her long nursing career, she worked for more than twenty years at Dameron Hospital where she served as Head Nurse of the Burn Unit, a job she took great pride in. She then semi-retired and worked in home health care while helping to raise four of her rambunctious grandsons.

Norma took great pleasure traveling across the world, often sharing those experiences with family and friends, particularly her sister Jean. She especially enjoyed time at the beach and would often be found silently orchestrating the waves from the shore.

A two-time breast cancer survivor-once in her forties and again in her eighties-Norma was a symbol of strength, courage, and determination to all around her. She also served as an example of great love and support to her family, friends, patients, and strangers alike.

Norma passed away peacefully in her home on October 12, 2022. It has been said she lived and died on her own terms.

Linda L. Jones

June 20, 1945 – October 10, 2022

Linda Louise Jones, 77, of Stockton, California passed away on October 10, 2022 in Carlsbad, California. She was born on June 20, 1945 to Frank and Marie (Wingate) Spiekermann in Tilden, Nebraska.  She grew up in that area, attending Bunker Hill Elementary, a one room K-8 school house in the country, and Tilden High School ’63.

She then went on to the University of Nebraska and became the first in her family to graduate from college, earning a bachelor’s degree in Spanish with a minor in history. This is also where she met her future husband of 54 years, Corwin. After graduating from UNL, they were married and moved to southern California, where she became an elementary school teacher and a few years later welcomed their first child, Sharon. She helped support the family while her husband went back to school to transition from electrical engineering to dentistry. In 1976, they moved to Stockton, California to start Corwin’s dental practice, and a month later welcomed their second child, Bryan. Stockton was their home for the next 45 years, having one more child, Melinda.

Linda took a break from teaching, shifting her focus to raising her family, with many years also helping in Corwin’s dental practice. Linda rarely missed a game, performance or awards ceremony and often volunteered in her children's classrooms. After her children graduated high school, she went back to teaching, this time teaching first grade at Colonial Heights, until she retired in 2010.  In 2005, she was awarded one of the highest honors, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National PTA, a first for any teacher at her school. She had a tremendous impact on so many lives. Linda was described by a principal she worked with as a model of motherhood, teaching, and matrimonial devotion.

Although many knew her as their teacher, she was also a talented piano player since her youth. Her children always knew she was in a good mood when she sat at the piano and started to play. She shared her love of music and passed it on to her children with piano lessons and choir at school and church. All three of her children sang in the Chamber Ensemble in high school, and she was at all of the performances, helping with extra practice, if needed. She also loved holidays, sharing traditions, decorating and creating magical moments for her children.

Linda was preceded in death by her husband, Corwin Jones (passed November 7, 2021) and parents Frank and Marie Spiekermann of Tilden, Nebraska; and survived by her children, Sharon Hughes (Chris) of Fremont, California, Bryan Jones (Shari) of Fallbrook, California, Melinda Decker (Bill Sunick) of Malvern, Pennsylvania; her grandchildren, Lauren and Jared Hughes, who are both in college; her brothers, Rich Spiekermann (Carol) of Peoria, Illinois, and  Charles Spiekermann (Linda) of Redondo Beach, California and many special extended family members.

Jerry Allen Baker was born April 21, 1936, in Bristol, Oklahoma. He was raised by his dad, Virgil Baker and mom Muriel (Mann) Baker in San Francisco, CA, Richmond, CA, and in Hobbs, New Mexico. He was adventurous and athletic as a child and recounted stories of riding the streetcar to Playland Beach, moving to a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment with his dad, mom, and two brothers, playing baseball and basketball, and getting suspended from Harry Elles Jr. High School for pulling a 7th grader’s pants down. He attended and graduated from Richmond High School with high marks and joined the Air Force. While serving in the Air Force he met and married his first wife, Eve, in Louisiana where he was stationed in 1956. Jerry and Eve had three daughters: Deborah, Cathy, and Vicki, but divorced in 1960. In 1962 jerry met his second wife, Rosella, in Castro Valley, CA, Rosella had six children from a previous marriage: Paul, James, Sharon, Shirley, Sandi, and John. Jerry married Rosella in 1964 and blended the two families. Jerry was a very devoted father and always made sure his wife and nine children were well taken care of. In 2015 Jerry met Patsy through friends.  They checked each other out through social media and found they had many things in common.  Their first date was at the Redwood Café in Modesto, it went very well – love at first sight!  Their relationship grew over the following years as they traveled and decorated their home in Manteca together.  When Jerry became ill Patsy remained by his side and lovingly cared for him.
