CELEBRATION

Many of us see death as a sad event but those who celebrate Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead view death as a welcomed part of life. Dia de los Muertos is a two day holiday that reunites the living and dead ~ celebrating life and death. That is why you will see brightly colored skeletons and skulls everywhere during the holiday. Often they are seen smiling, as a friendly nod to death, even mocking death.

The act of honoring the dead is widely celebrated around the world but Day of the Dead is unique in its traditions; the ofrenda, the meaning of life and death, the use of calaveras (skulls), the style influenced by La Catrina and more recently, the festivals in the streets.

The significance of the ofrenda, is that it is left for the souls of the deceased to come back and be able to enjoy their worldly pleasures once more. Typical items that are left to adorn the alter are china cut paper in different colors and patterns, photographs, personal items, toys, musical instruments, oranges, sugarcane, marigolds, sugar skulls, candles and pan de muerte - a traditional sugary pastry adorned with bone and skull shapes made from the same bread.

CEMETERIES - PANTEONS

It is customary for many to visit the graves of loved ones during the holiday and to celebrate Day of the Dead in the cemetery. Families clean and decorate the graves with marigolds and candles, often placing ofrendas next to them. Offerings of food and drink are left to honor their loved one.
